We have all been aware of the Google "natural link" saga which has brought down millions of websites. There have been discussions also on the link ratios to the home page and the internal pages.

Who knows what these percentages should be? Please support your answers with proof if any.

As a general rule of thumb I would tend to go 50% to homepage and 50% to interpages, that's if they're of equal authority. However, I think the whole discussion is skewed because it depends on the authority of the link in the eyes of Google. You can send a 1,000 links from an n/a or PR0 site and it will be as nothing comapared to a single PR5 link.

Hmm tricky question. Google is looking for links that looks natural, so if you have a specific equation like one to one will that look natural?I just generally try to figure out what is the most relevant to where I'm creating the link from. That way any visitors who follow the link get the best experience.

Trying to predict how "google" "thinks" about things means you'll wind up being either be a genius or sorely disappointed.

Probably Google is looking for "link appropriateness"... "What would someone do if they weren't trying to impres us?"

On Wordpress I have started using Yoast's SEO plugin because I think it does a good general job of reminding me of the necessary "basics" that should be on every page and the Wordpress content managing structure ends up handing some of those linking issues for me.

According to my own exp, for my small niche sites,  I'd like to create 100% backlinks directly to the homepage on a randomly order with a slow pace to make my backlinking look natural. Also, you should focus on the QUALITY OF THE BACKLINKS, not the quantity. A few in-context link from GOV and EDU sites might be powerful than hundreds of PR0-1 links.

I will usually go for 40% to 60% home page and 60% to 40% internal pages.

I'm not aware of a tool that does this, but if there is, I would use it to profile the ratio of home to internal page links on some of the larger authority sites out there.

These sites will have natural link profiles so will give you a good idea of what a natural link profile should look like.  However, I think as long as you have a healthy mixture of both you will be safe.

For me, I don't care about the percentage. All I care is the randomness of the anchors and the structure of the URL. But I've read some articles that using bold url is also a good choice and it must be in high percentage than using the keyword as an anchor text.
